Career description

Building cleaners EFZ are responsible for cleaning, maintaining and preserving the value of buildings and means of transport. They ensure cleanliness and hygiene in homes, offices, shops, hospitals, factories, trams and trains, on construction sites, etc.

In homes and offices, building cleaners EFZ carry out maintenance, intermediate and basic cleaning or remove stains from carpets, for example. They also take on challenging cleaning jobs that require the use of specialised equipment and resources. These include, for example, final cleaning after the completion of new buildings and conversions, professional disinfection of operating theatres, façade cleaning, graffiti removal and pest control.

Building cleaners EFZ work with machines and equipment such as high-pressure cleaners and nozzles, single-disc, scrubber-drier and vacuum sweeper machines, wet cleaning equipment, etc. They operate the machines correctly, maintain them and carry out minor repairs. They are also familiar with the use of cleaning agents, care products and disinfectants. Some of these are toxic and must be used correctly in order to prevent damage and to avoid endangering people and the environment.

For each job, commercial cleaners EFZ determine the most suitable and efficient cleaning method and estimate the time required. They select the right equipment, machines, tools and consumables, determine the quantity and concentration of cleaning agents and provide any aids required for the work to be carried out: Lifting equipment, scaffolding, tarpaulins, road barriers, extension cables, etc. After completing a job according to specifications, they write a report and inform their superiors.

In their work, building cleaners EFZ observe the regulations on occupational safety, health protection, hygiene and environmental protection. They are often on the move and must constantly adapt to new environments and tasks, sometimes working evenings and weekends. They work in a customer-orientated, independent and careful manner.

Education

  • Practical training:
    In a cleaning company, supplemented by the obligatory inter-company introductory courses and the “Handling toxic substances” course.
  • Theoretical training: Vocational school one day a week. Subjects: vocational studies, materials, scientific basics, language and communication, maths, society (law, politics, economics, culture), sport.
